Reading
That’s the thing about books. They let you travel without moving your feet.
Jhumpa Lahiri, (Author, The Namesake)
Reading is the gateway to all learning and is at the heart of the curriculum at North Fawdon. We recognise that the key to unlocking the potential in our children is through the development of phonics and fluency in reading, and through fostering a love of reading. These are key life skills and are prerequisites to being able to achieve high standards of language and literacy.
To develop reading skills, we place great emphasis on the adherence to our phonics SSP, building a ‘reading culture’ throughout our schools, and through the direct teaching of vocabulary acquisition. We aim to develop a positive culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in reading which provides strong, secure learning and ensures that most children develop a secure understanding of their year group’s concepts.
The teaching of reading is underpinned by the five big ideas, word reading (decoding & phonics), word reading (fluency), drawing meaning from reading, desire to read and coherence.
Reading Spine
As part of our reading offer at North Fawdon, we have a Reading Spine – a core collection of books that we want all of our pupils to experience and enjoy. These books are a mix of classics and essential reads that have been carefully chosen to create a living library inside of our pupils’ minds.
