Phonics

"Reading is the gateway skill that makes all other learning possible."

Barack Obama

At North Fawdon, we use Read Write Inc to teach phonics from Nursery to Year 2 and for our children in Key Stage 2 who need to catch up. Using RWI, the children learn to read and spell effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read and composing what they write.

When using RWI to read the children will:

  • learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts
  • learn to read words using Fred Talk
  • read lively stories featuring words they have learned to sound out
  • show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions.

When using RWI to write the children will:

  • learn to write the letters/letter groups which represent 44 sounds.
  • learn to write words by saying the sounds in Fred Talk
  • write simple sentences

How you can help your child with their phonics:

  • Read to them and always discuss the story you are reading to try to build your child’s comprehension skills, inference and understanding.

  • Practice the sounds they know at home.

  • Talk to them! The most important thing you can do is to talk to your child and listen to them when they are talking to you. Try to extend their vocabulary range and their skill at talking in increasingly more complex sentences. For example, try to teach them alternative words for ideas, or nouns they already know.
