PSHE RSE
I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence, but it comes from within. It is there all the time.
Anna Freud (Child Psychologist)
At North Fawdon Primary School, Personal, Social and Health education (PSHE) underpins everything we do to ensure our pupils are emotionally. mentally and physically skilled to be the best they can be now and in their futures.
We are a Healthy School and pride ourselves on promoting a healthy lifestyle for all our children, staff and families.
Through the use of SCARF (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship) toolkits, Restorative Practise and Zone of Regulations, our children are taught key life skills and provided with the knowledge to understand themselves, others and their community as well as their place in the wider world, including online.

- Develop and deepen pupils’ understanding of the fundamental British values
- Give pupils the knowledge and capability to take care of themselves and teach them how to seek advice when they suspect or know that something is wrong.
At North Fawdon Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is delivered through planned sessions using the SCARF toolkits to ensure progression from Nursery to Year 6. Themes from the Toolkits are;
- Me and My Relationships
- Valuing Difference
- Keeping Safe
- Rights and Respect
- Doing my Best
- Growing and Changing
In addition to the themes, we also have curriculum enhancement such as Anti-Bullying week, Mental Wellbeing Week and termly Online safety lessons. We also plan assemblies and restorative circles that link to local and regional news, issues and events.
From September 2020 Relationships and Health Education (RHE) became compulsory in primary schools. To develop RHE we have introduced Restorative Practice circles to promote relational skills across all age phases. RHE is also woven into the SCARF toolkits to ensure progression of skills from Nursery to Year 6.
Our discrete PSHE lessons are taught across school in discreet planned sessions but may also be referred to and referenced through other curriculum areas. Extra sessions are also planned from using the local authority results from the annual ‘Health Related Behaviours’ Questionnaire completed by Year 4 and 6. This draws on key issues facing North Fawdon children, families and the community, making our curriculum personalised and responsive to needs.
Additionally, PSHE is taught through:
- Workshops delivered by external agencies
- School assemblies
- Sessions delivered by our school nurse
- Through books and stories in the classroom and in assemblies
- Our School Core Values
- Visits e.g. Safety works
- Visitors such as the Police or Health Services
Relationships & Health Education
We want all children to grow up healthy, happy, safe, and able to manage the challenges and opportunities of modern Britain. That is why, from September 2020, all primary age children will be taught Relationships and Health Education.
Relationships Education will put in place the building blocks needed for positive and safe relationships, including with family, friends and online.
Health Education aims to give your child the information they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing, to recognise issues in themselves and others, and to seek support as early as possible when issues arise.
We develop healthy relationships through Relational and Restorative practices.
Your rights as a parent
The important lessons you teach your child about healthy relationships, looking after themselves and staying safe, are respected and valued under this new curriculum. Teaching at school will complement and reinforce the lessons you teach your child as they grow up.
You cannot withdraw your child from Relationships Education because it is important that all children receive this content, covering topics such as friendships and how to stay safe.
